Earlier today, I read an article posted about the 15 best restaurants in Tuscaloosa. I love that people are writing about local eats and bringing restaurants into the light. While this was a great article, the article featured a bunch of upper scale, expensive restaurants. All of those restaurants are AMAZING, they are more reasonable to eat at on a date night or when your parents come to visit.
Here at Fast Foodie, we are all about eating good food no matter what price range you are looking for.
Here is the list, in no specific order, of the Top 10 Restaurants In Tuscaloosa (on a college budget):
1. Ichiban Japanese Grill
Ichiban is one of my favorite restaurants in town. At Ichiban, you can’t judge a book by its cover. The outside may need a pressure wash and a fresh coat of paint, but once you enter those doors, you won’t know what hit you. With extremely fresh fish and meat, what ever you order at Ichiban will be sure to make your night better. I urge you to try their unique take on common sushi rolls like the Kylie Roll, the Tuscaloosa Roll, and if you are brave, the Crazy Roll. Even if you think you aren’t hungry, try a bento box. It is the perfect amount of food to satisfy your cravings.
2. Glory Bound Gyro Company
Praise the human who brought Glory Bound to T-Town. This amazing place has options for the whole family. If you are thinking “hummus”, Glory Bound is your place. They have 10, yes 1-0, different flavors of hummus. Can’t pick just one? Try the trio. You can get a taste of their variety. Glory Bound is great for lunch or dinner. If a Bloody Mary is what you’re craving, ask for their “Greek Style Bloody Mary”. It will leave you wanting another!
3. T-Town Cafe
T-Town Cafe is a cute little restaurant that has just about the best fried catfish I’ve ever had. The first time I ate here, I asked the manager what her favorite dish was. Both the manager and all of the workers simultaneously agreed to the fried catfish. I am going to make a confession now. I enjoy the catfish so much, I have never tried anything else. I have been with other people who have tried other things and I’ve never heard a complaint. They have a variety of fresh sides every day, which helps me change things up. But for now, I am going to continue to have their amazing catfish.
4. Bob’s Victory Grill
Bob’s is the place to go with your picky friends. They have a HUGE menu with a huge variety of items. From hand tossed pizzas and calzones to redneck caviar (you will have to go to find out what it is), Bob’s has something for everyone! Not only does Bob’s have an extensive menu, they have an extensive BEER menu! If you are looking for a good time with GREAT food and service, Bob’s Victory Grill is the place for you!
5. Margarita’s Grill
Chips and queso on the mind? Look no further than Margarita’s Grill. I went through a Margarita’s Grill phase and I ate here every day for a month. It never got old! The management at Margarita’s Grill is devoted to treating you like family. You will always have a great meal with great service. Sometimes I feel like all mexican restaurants margaritas (alcoholic margaritas that is) taste the same and give me a terrible sugar hangover. Margarita’s name explains what they are famous for. I love their flavors and the fact they don’t kill you the next day! (TIP: you can mix the flavors!!! Try strawberry/peach. ITS AMAZING)
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you put your bento box in a burrito? If your previous answer was yes, all of your hopes and dreams are about to come true. Tacogi is a self proclaimed asian fusion joint. Their specialty is the chicken teriyaki burrito. With tender chicken and fried rice drenched in shrimp sauce, what could possibly go wrong? The answer is nothing. This is one of the greatest inventions since sliced bread. RUN, don’t walk to Tacogi.
7. Taco Mama
I have done a post on Taco Mama before, but I can never say too many good things about the place. I love Taco Mama for various reasons. First off, the food is great. You can tell it is fresh, high quality ingredients. Second, the margaritas. They are stellar. They break the common trend in margaritas by making pomegranate, fresh watermelon, and jalepeno. My third favorite part of Taco Mama is the service and ambiance. I can honestly say I eat Taco Mama an unhealthy amount and “YO MAMA” never disappoints.
8. Mr. Chens
Mr. Chens is one of a kind. To enter the restaurant, you must walk through the asian grocery store. Yes, you are in the right place. The food at Mr. Chens is delicious. You get PF Changs portions but it tastes ten times better and doesn’t make you want to purge after! If you are feeling adventurous, Mr. Chens has fresh fish, duck, and other unique dishes! Make sure to wear your track pants. You won’t be able to eat all of the food!
Now with multiple locations, Hooligan’s is a Tuscaloosa must. Hooligan’s serves a variety of authentic gyros and Mediterranean food. They also serve amazing burgers and sandwiches. Even though I included Glory Bound in this list, the two are very different. My favorite part about Hooligan’s is the “mint iced tea”. This is something I had never had before I dined at Hooligan’s. This is a no-frill, laid back environment with DELICIOUS FOOD! Don’t forget your side of seasoned fries!
DRUM ROLL FOR NUMBER 10………
10. Quick Grill
Hungry for a hearty dinner? Quick Grill is not the place to go. Quick Grill is a University of Alabama LEGEND! Had one too many at Innisfree or Rounder’s? THEN YES QUICK GRILL IS THE PLACE FOR YOU! I won’t lie to you, I have had my fair share of post studying messy fry, or my “I’m seriously craving falafel” meal. It is perfectly acceptable to eat Quick Grill sober. It just is more fun after a night on the town! If you are reading this thinking, “EW you are a disgusting monster. Who eats that?” Well, you are the disgusting monster because Quick Grill is my favorite local joint in Tuscaloosa. What I am not telling you is to roll out the red carpet and bring your grandparents, but I AM telling you to eat here before you graduate. If you are not a student, call up the babysitter, roll on down to Catch 22, and enjoy yourself in our amazing Downtown. Follow that night up by a large messy fry with ranch, you will regret it in the morning, but you will be thankful you did it!
Tuscaloosa has so much to offer whether it is fine dining or walk up windows and falafel. I feel like sometimes we over look the amazing places we have right under our noses. Most of these places aren’t ideal for people on diets or people who don’t eat, but hey, let loose a little! Eat a greasy cheeseburger and get your hands messy with buffalo sauce! Isn’t that what life is all about? Well that is what Fast Foodie is all about.
PS- Wondering why there are only 10? Well, I’m leaving some so I can write another post!
